How Many Work Hours Are in a Year? The 2026 Numbers, Month by Month

Summary

The standard answer is 2,080 work hours in a year: 40 hours a week multiplied by 52 weeks. The real number depends on the calendar. 2026 has 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at eight hours a day, and 250 working days once the 11 federal holidays are removed, which is 2,000 hours. Take off two weeks of vacation and a typical US full-time employee is scheduled for about 1,920 hours. This guide gives the 2026 figures month by month, shows how to convert an hourly rate to an annual salary and back, compares the scheduled total with the hours people actually work according to government data, and explains why the number of productive hours in a year is lower still.

Scheduled hours and worked hours are rarely the same number. E-Monitor's automatic time tracking shows the real total per person and team, including the after-hours work that never reaches a timesheet. Try it free →

The Short Answer: 2,080 Hours, or 2,000 After Holidays

There are 2,080 work hours in a year for a full-time employee on a 40-hour week. The arithmetic is 40 hours × 52 weeks. Payroll systems, benefits calculations and the hourly-to-salary conversion all use 2,080 as the standard, which is why it is the figure most people mean when they ask how many work hours are in a year.

The calendar does not cooperate perfectly. A year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus one day (two in a leap year). 2026 begins on a Thursday, so the extra day is a weekday and the year contains 261 weekdays rather than 260. At eight hours a day that is 2,088 hours. Most employers ignore the difference and keep 2,080 as the salaried standard.

Subtract holidays and the number drops. The United States has 11 federal holidays in 2026, and all 11 fall on, or are observed on, a weekday. That leaves 250 working days, or 2,000 hours. Subtract two weeks of paid vacation and the scheduled total is 240 days, or 1,920 hours. Add five sick days and you are at 1,880. The number of hours in a work year, then, runs from 2,088 on the raw calendar down to roughly 1,900 for an employee who takes the leave they are entitled to.

Work Hours in 2026, Month by Month

The table below counts weekdays in each month of 2026, removes the federal holidays that fall in that month, and converts the result to hours at eight hours a day. It is useful for monthly capacity planning, prorating salaries for starters and leavers, and checking a payroll run against the calendar.

Two notes on the holidays. Independence Day falls on a Saturday in 2026, so federal offices observe it on Friday 3 July, which is why July shows a holiday on a weekday. The extra Christmas Eve and Boxing Day closures that federal workers received in 2025 were a one-year executive order and are not on the 2026 Office of Personnel Management schedule. Private employers set their own holiday lists; a company that observes nine holidays rather than eleven has 252 working days, or 2,016 hours.

Quarterly, the pattern is lopsided: Q1 has 61 working days, Q2 63, Q3 64 and Q4 62. Teams that plan capacity on an even 62.5 days a quarter will be short in Q3 and over in Q1, which is one of the reasons monthly utilisation reports should divide by actual working days rather than a flat average.

Hourly to Salary and Back: The 2,080 Conversion

The 2,080 figure is the bridge between hourly and annual pay. To convert an hourly rate to a salary, multiply by 2,080. To convert a salary to an hourly rate, divide by 2,080. A few reference points:

Hourly rateAnnual (2,080 h)Monthly (÷ 12)Weekly (40 h)
$15$31,200$2,600$600
$20$41,600$3,467$800
$25$52,000$4,333$1,000
$30$62,400$5,200$1,200
$40$83,200$6,933$1,600
$50$104,000$8,667$2,000

A $60,000 salary is $28.85 an hour on 2,080 hours. The same salary spread over the 2,000 hours actually worked after holidays is $30 an hour, and over 1,920 hours after vacation it is $31.25. That gap matters when you cost projects. The effective hourly cost of a salaried employee is always higher than salary divided by 2,080, before you even add employer taxes and benefits. Our guide to the fully loaded cost of an employee works through the full calculation, and the billable hours calculator shows how many of those hours a services business can actually invoice.

For part-time staff, scale the base. A 30-hour week is 1,560 hours a year; a 20-hour week is 1,040. For a 37.5-hour week, common in the UK and in US office roles with unpaid lunch, the annual figure is 1,950 hours. A 35-hour week is 1,820.

How Many Hours People Actually Work

Scheduled hours and worked hours diverge in both directions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports average weekly hours for all private non-farm employees at 34.3 in spring 2026. That average includes part-time workers, so it understates the full-time figure, but even full-time employees average closer to 42 to 44 hours in BLS household survey data once overtime and second jobs are included. Across a year, OECD figures put the average American worker at about 1,800 hours, well under the 2,080 standard, because the average blends in part-time work, leave and unemployment spells.

For a full-time knowledge worker the honest picture is different again. Timesheets typically show 40 hours. Activity data from monitoring and time-tracking tools shows that a meaningful share of work happens outside logged hours: early email, lunch at the desk, and the evening catch-up that nobody records. Our analysis of after-hours work found this unlogged time is the most common reason a team's real annual hours exceed the scheduled 2,000, and it is invisible until it is measured.

The divergence has become a compliance issue as well as a wellbeing one. For non-exempt employees, hours over 40 in a workweek are overtime whether or not they were recorded, and from 2026 the overtime premium is also a figure the employer must report on the W-2 under the qualified overtime rules. The number of hours in a work year is no longer only a planning assumption; for hourly staff it has to be an evidenced total.

Productive Hours Are Fewer Than Work Hours

Being at work for 2,000 hours is not the same as producing for 2,000 hours. Every study of desk work finds a large gap between hours present and hours of focused output, and the gap is structural rather than a sign of lazy employees. Meetings, email, context switching, waiting on other people and the normal recovery between tasks all consume paid time.

The widely quoted figure of two to three productive hours a day comes from self-reported surveys and overstates the problem; activity data from time-tracking tools usually shows four to six hours of task-focused work in an eight-hour day, varying by role. Our guide to productive hours per day explains where the different numbers come from. Applied to 250 working days, a realistic range is 1,000 to 1,500 focused hours a year per full-time employee.

That figure, not 2,080, is the one that should drive capacity planning. A team of ten does not have 20,000 hours of output a year; it has perhaps 12,000, and the exact number is knowable. Measuring it with productivity monitoring at team level, rather than guessing, is the difference between delivery plans that hold and plans that slip every quarter for reasons nobody can name.

Work Hours in a Year Outside the United States

The 2,080 standard is American. Elsewhere, both the working week and statutory leave change the total. France's legal week is 35 hours, which is 1,820 hours before its five weeks of paid leave and 11 public holidays bring the typical year closer to 1,600. The UK has no statutory maximum below the 48-hour Working Time Regulations opt-out, but a 37.5-hour week with 28 days of statutory leave (including bank holidays) gives about 1,740 hours. Germany's collective agreements commonly set 35 to 38 hours and six weeks of leave, landing around 1,650.

Australia's standard is 38 hours, or 1,976 a year before four weeks of leave and roughly ten public holidays, about 1,750 net. India's statutory limit is 48 hours a week for most workers, which is why Indian teams often show 2,300 scheduled hours or more. For distributed teams this matters in a practical way: a project plan that assumes 2,000 hours per head will overstate European capacity by 15 to 20 percent and understate some Asian teams by the same margin. Our guide to work hours tracking covers how to set per-country schedules so utilisation reports stay comparable.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How many work hours are in a year?

2,080 for a standard 40-hour week (40 × 52). In 2026 the calendar has 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours, and 250 working days after the 11 federal holidays, which is 2,000 hours. An employee who also takes two weeks of vacation is scheduled for about 1,920 hours.

2. How many working days are there in 2026?

250 working days. 2026 has 261 weekdays, and all 11 federal holidays fall on or are observed on a weekday, including Independence Day, which is observed on Friday 3 July because 4 July is a Saturday.

3. How many work hours are in a month?

About 173 on average (2,080 ÷ 12), but it varies from 152 hours in February and November 2026 to 176 in March, April, July and December. Monthly totals depend on the number of weekdays and holidays in that month.

4. How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by 2,080. $25 an hour is $52,000 a year. To go the other way, divide the salary by 2,080: $60,000 is $28.85 an hour. The true hourly cost of a salaried employee is higher once holidays, leave and employer costs are included.

5. How many hours is full-time per year?

Full-time is usually 2,080 scheduled hours in the US (40 hours a week). A 37.5-hour week is 1,950 hours and a 35-hour week is 1,820. Under the Affordable Care Act, 30 hours a week, or 1,560 a year, counts as full-time for employer coverage purposes.

6. How many hours does the average American work in a year?

About 1,800 according to OECD data, which averages across full-time and part-time workers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts average weekly hours for all private employees at around 34.3 in 2026. Full-time workers individually average more than 40 hours a week once overtime is counted.

7. How many of those hours are actually productive?

Fewer than half, for most desk roles. Activity data typically shows four to six focused hours in an eight-hour day, which is roughly 1,000 to 1,500 productive hours across 250 working days. Capacity plans built on 2,080 hours per person consistently over-promise.
